Richland Citizens Committee Tackles Cafeteria and Bus Plans

The Richland Citizens Committee discussed the school lunch program and transportation system at its last meeting. Verle Heller presided as co chair, and Mrs Sylvia Baughman outlined the cafeteria story from soup service to government testing and subsidies. The committee noted that pupil participation has fallen to about 55 percent due to price increases, and asked whether continuing the current lunch program justifies the district budget. Kenneth Pipkin described eight buses in regular use with one spare, outlining transportation logistics for students, with the session set to continue on page 2.

Billy Mills to Speak at Kiwanis Club Dinner

The Shafter Kiwanis Club will honor the 1965 66 South Sequoia cross country champion December 2 with a meal at Hall. Billy Mills 1964 Olympic gold medalist and California athlete of the year will speak. Tickets cost 2.50 and are on sale at Wick's Drive In Shafter Drug Store and Coach Bill Silverberg. only 125 seats available.

Rotary Club of Shafter Observes World Foundation Week

The Rotary Club of Shafter joined over 12 000 clubs in 128 regions observing The Rotary Foundation Week November 14 20. Foundation funds nearly 1 million dollars for programs including study team exchanges and international training grants. Shafter celebrated with a November 16 meeting featuring Mary Walhoad of the AFS program. A Kern County 4th Sunday Singing Convention is slated for November 28 at 3 p.m. at the Assembly of God Church in Shafter.

Kelly Re-Elected to Health Council in Chairman Spot

H W Kelly was re-elected to the Kern County Health Council as chairman. The Kern County Council met at the General Hospital Auditorium in Bakersfield to discuss facility expansions and relocations. Trans American Hospital Association seeks a 10 bed psychiatric unit in Bakersfield, Memorial Hospital requests maternity ward relocation and 22 beds, Kern Valley Hospital District proposes facility with 13 acute and 10 long term beds in Kern River Valley. A convalescent unit plant was introduced for study.

Enrollment Up 588 at Kern County High Schools

Superintendent Theron L. McCuen reported a 588 student enrollment increase to 17,442 across Kern County eleven high schools as of October 31, 1965, from 16,854 the prior year. He noted the State Board of Education deferred action on county-wide school unification.

City Council Adopts Ordinance and Purchases New Sweeper

The City Council approved Ordinance No 166 bringing additional streets into the city limits and instructed the city clerk to request a state survey on signal lights at Central Valley Highway and Lerdo crossing. Council hired Loren S Bush for fire protection work and approved a $12 083 76 purchase for a new street sweeper.
