Probation program aids local youth in Shafter area
Pat Flores of Kern County Probation leads the Northern Repeat Offender Prevention Program aimed at youths 15 1/2 and younger. The program, supported by Richland School District and Shafter Police, offers crime prevention education, school attendance monitoring, counseling, tutoring, and parent classes to reduce reoffending. A Cal State Bakersfield four year study identifies key risk factors including school problems, substance abuse, high risk delinquent behavior, and family issues.

Fresno Council again delays sludge contract vote
Fresno City Council postpones a vote on a plan to land apply sewage sludge in Kern County. Senator Dean Florez had planned to address the council about the Tule Ranch Magan Ranch contract but the item was pulled from the agenda for procedural reasons and will be reconsidered at the November 29 meeting. Efforts to ban sludge import to Kern are active, with Kern County pursuing a ballot measure in June 2006.
