The Seal Sale opens in Kern County as part of the 39th national Christmas Seal Sale to fund tuberculosis work. Miss Mary Ellen Hagan, executive secretary, urges prompt returns to raise $30,000 for 1945 activities and notes Seals were mailed on November 19. Also mentions Hooker Oak near Chico.
Kern County approves A W Noon of Taft as chairman of the 1948-49 Gold Centennial Committee appointed by William A Smith and Joseph R Knowland. The statewide observance aims to showcase California history and landmarks in a major state wide celebration.
The 1606 charter by James I authorized the planting of colonies in Virginia marking the first English permission for settlement in America.
Vernon Pierce purchases Harton Jewelry Store this week and plans to operate as Pierce Jewelry Store. He previously ran a Shafter shop for years, then served in war work near Minter Field. The shop will offer watch repair and a wide selection of watches rings and other jewelry.
Kern county elementary districts receive 1,836,649 from the state for the current fiscal year up from 1,338,787 last year. The average daily attendance rose to 22,032 from 19,914, with aid per pupil at 83.36 versus 67.23. Shafter district gets 7,141 based on 81 attendance, up from 5,608 for 72 last year.
The American Legion and Auxiliary in Shafter launch a drive to provide Christmas gifts for wounded and disabled service men and women in government and veterans hospitals. Aimed to total 100,000 gifts nationwide, the local group asks donors to select five items from a prescribed list and label packages, with gifts due by December 10.
Students at Shafter High School collected 38.65 for the Junior Red Cross drive. First period classes funded the sum with daily tallies. the United States History class led contributions with 26.13.
Francis H. Wenham, an English engineer and scientist, filed the earliest known patent sketch for a biplane and also described a triplane concept in 1866, laying groundwork for later aviation designs.
Xmas Seal Sunday will be observed Nov 25 in county churches with the opening Monday of the 39th annual Drive to raise funds for the health program of the County Tuberculosis Association. Rev Ralph Cox of Bakersfield chairs the church committee and says many churches will display notices and several clergymen will urge broad cooperation in the tuberculosis fight. Rev Wm Harper of the Shafter Ministerial Association aided publicity in the Shafter area.
