Elected officials approved corrective legislation effective January 5 addressing burial rights in public cemetery districts. Ruben Siemens led the push, and Governor signed the measure last week with Siemens invited to witness. Also notes Shafter Generals face San Joaquin Memorial in Fresno with optimistic expectations and booster's crowd anticipated.
Camp Fire Girls in Kern County are selling chocolate covered mints and sorted chocolates for 1.50 per box as part of the annual sale. Mrs. Jon W. Johnston notes the county goal is 40000 boxes, with proceeds supporting council operations, group projects, dues, and camping fees through December 2. The program includes Blue Birds Adventurers Jr Hi Discovery Club and Horizon Club, emphasizing personal development and buyer communication.
A community drug awareness seminar sponsored by the Shafter Technical Advisory Committee and supported by the Richland PTA and Richland Teachers Association will be held Tuesday November 26 at 7 p.m. in the Richland music building. Speakers include Lt Earl O'Brien Phil Foley and Larry Woodson. A parent focused panel will follow with audience discussion and coffee served.
A Monday evening crash at Palm and Merced Avenue killed Ira Bailey Jr. of Shafter and Luke Edward Albert of Wasco. Passenger Billy McGowen of Shafter sustained major injuries and was listed as satisfactory at Kern General Hospital the next day. Bailey failed to stop at the stop sign, CHP said.
Aimberg of Shafter and ranch manager for Kernal Farming Co. of McFarland is named one of 30 promising young agriculturists selected for a two year leadership training program. The California Agricultural Education Foundation sponsors the fifth such group with support from major farming interests and related organizations.
Richland Board of Trustees reviewed four auditor recommendations at Monday’s meeting. Two completed, one under study, one impractical. They revised student funds recording and created a deposit affidavits file. Cafeteria ticket procedures under study and warrant handling duties remain separate due to staff limits.
Ruben Siemens of Kern County Public Cemetery District 1 witnessed Assembly Bill 3353 signing with Governor Reagan. The measure expands burial eligibility, lets district boards set indigent burial rates, and creates a nonresident fee formula, effective January 1, 1975, to resolve unequal burial rights for families.

The week ending Tuesday brought chilly weather in Shafter with a high of 75 and a low of 38. Light fog occurred on several mornings. Readings taken at the USDA Cotton Research Station record daily highs and lows.
