4 H Achievement Fete At Rio Bravo Draws 225
More than 225 people attended the Rio Bravo School 4 H achievement program. Special awards were given by E J Mahoney of the California Bankers Association to Maxine Townsend and the late William Araujo. Charters were awarded to Buttonwillow Rosedale Fruitvale Delano Rio Bravo Maple Glennville Greeley Cummings Valley Greenfield and Magunden. Friday is the deadline for Shafter Chamber of Commerce members to return ballots for directors for the coming year. Secretary Ernie Norman announced that 53 ballots have been submitted so far and seven directors will be chosen from a slate of 14 candidates including Bert Ware G Whitson Merton Wiedmann Adolf Kirschenmann Dr. George W. How and Why Club Initiates Students at Shafter High
Four students including two girls were initiated into the How and Why Club at Shafter High School this week. The club is predominantly male and eager for science and adventure. Initiates are Sue Howell Lawanda Edwards Dick Loftin and Phil Johnson. Plans were made for a trip to Red Rock Canyon the first weekend in December. Joseph Galante biology teacher is the club adviser.

Grower Ships Lettuce North From Shafter Area
First shipment of Great Lakes lettuce from the Shafter area was sent to northern California Oregon and Washington markets this past week. Charley Codd shipped about 2500 crates by truck after the first cutting. An other cutting is expected within the next couple weeks. Last weekend's rain storm is expected to help the second lettuce.
