Shatter Police Net Stolen Cars and a Murderer
Police in nine days recovered two stolen cars and arrested a convicted murderer who had escaped a Georgia prison. They also solved a string of small burglaries by arresting a former Rio Bravo youth, Sammy William Armstrong, 42, for drunk driving at Smith's Corners and sentencing him to 75 days in county jail. Armstrong’s own car, a 1953 Mercury, was found stolen from Richland Elementary School and traced to a garage where the car was supposedly being painted.

PG&E Restores Power 26 Minutes After Line Break
A rainstorm caused a short circuit in an air switch in Shafter plunging most of the city into darkness at 12:20 a.m. PG and E workers quickly dispatched and patrolled the line until a mile west of the city limits on Lerdo Highway. The fire on a pole north of Lerdo off Central Valley Highway was extinguished and repairs completed the next morning.
