Shafter Press sports writer to retire after 84th rivalry game
David Armendariz, long time Shafter Press sports writer, retires this weekend after chronicling the Shafter Generals vs Wasco Tigers rivalry through football volleyball baseball and more since the early 1980s. He recalls his first story on the Buttonwillow Roadrunners and notes athletes like Michael Rubio Scott Peterson and Octavio Patino as memorable subjects. Armendariz also discusses his philosophy of foregrounding the "little guy" and his experience photographing games and profiling athletes, coaches, and fans over twenty plus years.
