Council Votes to Install Wall on South Shafter Avenue

The city council decides to install a wall on South Shafter Avenue and grants a deprecation on abated structures on Central Avenue damaged in an earthquake. They surface the City Hall parking lot for 1152 dollars and defer James Street work to next budget year while installing curbs on Rodriguez tract. Fire hits cotton fields in Shafter and Minter Field area

Over a weekend two late night and dawn fires sparked at Imperial Enos Lane and Merced area were blamed on cotton picker sparks. Kern County fire crews responded to three incidents near Lerdo Zucker Road and Minter Field yard baled cotton with estimated losses ranging from 12 to 42 dollars for cotton and 100 dollars for a trailer.

Property Owners Meeting Rescheduled to Tuesday

The meeting was canceled due to a scheduling conflict with the Kern County Water Agency meeting and has been moved to Tuesday to accommodate attendees and ensure participation.

Committee Fails to Reach Job Qualifications Agreement

The board meeting on September 15 lacked a complete agreement on job qualifications. Rev Julius Brooks moved to remove the requirement, seconded by Louella. Directors present included David Fairbairn who voted against removal, with John Holt abstaining. Kelly and six other committee members supported keeping citizenship as a qualification.

College Site Evaluation Moves Ahead in Kern County

Inglewood site evaluation for the State College in Kern County progressed on Tuesday with Chancellor Glenn S. Dumke announcing meetings with county leaders and planning officials. The North Kern committee proposed Shafter Airport and Famoso Drag Strip sites, noting the Airport location offers 320 acres plus existing utilities and sewage disposal.

Abram Zacharias 87 Pioneer Dies in Shafter

Abram Zacharias 87 long time Shafter resident and Seventh day Adventist Church member died. Funeral services were held Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the Seventh Adventist Church of Shafter with burial in Shafter Cemetery. Survived by widow Amanda Zacharias of Shafter, one son Emil Zacharias of Seattle, daughters Ett Isaac Vidla Siemens Pixley Emiley of California and others, 12 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
