Shafter students walk out over Proposition 187 protest
About 150 students from Richland Junior High and Shafter High School walked out to protest Proposition 187. Leaders Miguel Heredia and Danny Lopez spoke at Manuel Park, while other demonstrators named included Santiago Zuniga Paty Gonzalez Toni Orozco Eva Ayan. A school official said participants have until January to make up missed work, and discipline would be limited to a soft penalty.

Power outage hits 1200 homes in Shafter area
PG&E spokesman said a Tuesday morning outage in Shafter began at 12 37 a.m. and was restored shortly after 7 a.m. The 6 1/2 hour loss affected 1200 homes, with 66 still out at press time. Cause not yet determined.
