Crowds lined the Cr ot streets as the Kiwanis Club ninth annual Halloween parade rolled through Shafter. Kindergarten to fourth graders led off in costumes, followed by decorated vehicles. The cornfield float with a scarecrow and pumpkin won first prize.
The Pot of Gold drawing offers a $100 cash prize plus $50, $30 and $20 prizes at 7:30 p.m. in County Park. Shafter shoppers who attend may win by collecting tickets for each dollar spent. The event, with a musical guide by John Gaedle, is promoted by local merchants as a real bargain-filled Friday night lead-in to the weekend.
Shafter area residents had more tuberculosis x ray checks last week than ever before with 1180 people tested in a four day campaign. Checks occurred at Mannel Central, Central and James, North Camp, Smiths Corner, South Camp and My rick s Corner. A county tuberculosis and health association directors meeting will be held tonight in Bakersfield with Mrs G Ohlsson and Mrs Elmer Richards among the Shafter attendees.
Exeter High School football, top in the Kern Tulare league, travels to face Shafter Generals in a decisive season game. Shafter earned a 26-0 win over Strathmore Spartans last Friday, while Corcoran Panth ers and Exeter both sat at three wins and one tie earlier this season.
Building permits in Shafter for October reached 147950 dollars according to Building Inspector E. K. Grant. The boom includes 12 three bedroom cottages about 8500 each in the Kirschenmann tract and the new Shafter Press office at 183 Central Valley Highway valued at 12000, with initial construction underway. November opens with Union Congregational Church permit for a 65000 edifice at Tulare and Sycamore. Myrtle Stone says veterans can still get 100 percent financing on new lots despite new regulations.

Shafter High School the Generals, undefeated in league play, join a restructured San Joaquin Valley schedule. The southern section includes Wasco Corcoran Exeter Lemore and Coalinga while Shafter also faces Taft Arvin and nearby teams to fill out the year. The change aims for fairer travel and more local league games.
The Shafter Community Chest surpassed its $4450 target with $4459.88 raised after the kickoff week. Panero cited 84 volunteers and noted advanced gifts pending arrival while a breakdown showed $2265.50 from the advanced gift committee led by Mortimer and $2194.38 from top workers. Funds will support Boy Scouts $2000, Campfire Girls $1600, Shafter Recreation Commission $500, and YMCA $350.
Peter Ohanneson of Shafter refutes Joe C. Lewis’s loyalty oath accusation. He claims an ad in the Bakersfield Californian fabricates letters from organizations opposing loyalty oath laws and a pamphlet “The Bar Speaks Out on Test Oaths” does not exist. Local bar groups found no basis for the pamphlet or claim.
Rains on Monday slowed cotton picking and caused one power pole fire in Shafter area. Beach Avenue fire near Burbank and a blaze at E. G. Krueger ranch damaged a machine picked cotton pile. Estimated damage was 17.50 dollars. Exhaust spark likely caused the fires.
Sixty Indonesian air cadets arriving at Shafter Airport will follow a year long program combining fighter and bomber flight training with English mathematics and American history. J S Hennessy states 60 staff with 12 instructors will run the course, aiming to instill a sense of freedom and Americanism through classrooms tours and recreation in Kern County and the San Joaquin Valley.
More than 200 delegates conclude the 41st Pacific District Conference of the Mennonite Brethren Church with officer installation. The Sunday gathering drew about 2500 members for special services as delegates report 4373 total members and 5199 Sunday school enrollment amid missions funding to India Africa Japan South America and Los Angeles Fresno and Victor city missions. Officers installed include Stanley Martens Reedley chair Richard Wiens Salem Ore vice chair Lowell Bergman Shafter executive secretary Donald Buller Winton treasurer and Al Nickle Jr San Jose corresponding secretary. The conference theme centered on watch and featured speakers on foreign and home missions.
Alvin Lewis a 28 year old Shafter cotton worker survived being buried under cotton seed hulls when a load shifted at the S A Camp plant in Cawelo. He covered his face with his hands allowing air to reach him and was pulled free by nearby workers. Rescue teams were not required after he was recovered.
The Shafter Press will charge seven cents at news stands next week, up from a nickel, while subscriptions stay at 2.50 per year. Rising costs for newsprint and equipment are cited. The paper remains locally focused with extensive coverage of Shafter, Buttonwillow, Lerdo, Maple, Rio Bravo, Cherokee Strip, Mexican Colony and Greater Shafter.
