A freight train derailed near Fresno Avenue and Santa Fe Way, spilling Freon 22. About 50 residents nearby were treated as emergency crews evacuated the area to Shafter High School gym. Residents described waking to a thick chemical cloud and confusion as responders worked through the night.
Kern County Cemetery District No 1 board votes to levy 15.11 per year for 10 years on about 12 200 property owners to fund cemetery expansion as land costs and development soar. District manager Tim Unruh cites nearing capacity at Shafter cemetery and proposes information hearings on November 14 and a December 14 meeting to decide. The district serves Lost Hills Wasco Shafter Stockdale Highway and surrounding areas.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the new Shafter McDonald’s will take place at 1 p.m. on Thursday, November 2, at the southwest corner of Lerdo Highway and Shafter Avenue. Mayor Linda Gragg and McDonald’s representatives will speak as crews demolish the old garage and a house on the site. The 29,000 square foot project is to be managed by Stephanie Araujo, who co-owns with junior partners selected for productivity. Construction is expected to take only a few weeks once the permit was issued.
