The Carrington of Shafter Convalescent Home hosted a free seminar on Alzheimer’s Disease. Dr Antonia Chalmers outlined early diagnosis, memory changes, and the need for continued medication, noting no cure exists and family input aids assessment.
Kern County Grand Jury visited Lerdo Jail Facilities in Bakersfield on March 16 2006 to review operations. The complex includes Lerdo Pre Trial Lerdo Minimum and Lerdo Maximum facilities with total capacity about 2310 inmates and a Master Control Room. The Pre Trial unit houses 1232 inmates with seven pods, has an infirmary and law library and houses 121 federal prisoners.
The Shafter Public Health Department lists June clinics requiring appointments except immunization. Schedule includes Family Planning and Pregnancy Screening on June 28, Child Health on June 8, and Senior Health Screenings June 15, all at 329 Central Valley Highway. The Shafter Library runs a summer program Paws Claws Scales and Tales June 5 to July 27 with events CALM talks June 7 and snakes and animal programs mid-June to July, plus a July 12 Creepy Critters appearance. call 746-2156 for details.

The Kern Economic Journal reports a 2.4 percent annual growth in Kern County for Q1 2006, adding $90 million in personal income while unemployment rose to 8.8 percent. Bakersfield and rural pockets show varied rates, with single-digit jobless figures signaling a shift. Non-farm jobs increased nearly 4,000, and consumer confidence gained two points as optimistic business outlook persists.
