Shafter Recreation District candidates outline views
Eight candidates seek five board seats in the June ballot for the Shafter Recreation District. Fred Starrh urges local funding to expand programs for all ages, citing costs of jail and law enforcement and stressing community impact beyond Buttonwillow origins. Mickey Gladden, Dave Mizener and others emphasize youth baseball, senior services, arts and crafts, transportation, and partnerships to create a full-time, locally funded program. The campaign highlights support for local schools, crime reduction through recreation, and plans for a district-wide approach after Prop 13-related funding changes.

Colorful June planted Fuchsias bloom in hanging baskets
Colorful hanging baskets June planted Fuchias can still make a big splash of color. The California Association of Nurserymen suggests at least two or three plants per container for the best show. Keep them watered daily and pinch out tips of new growth to keep bushes full and flowering.
