Spud shipments from the Shafter area climb beyond 1952 totals, aided by expanded acreage. Growers face low prices around 1.40 per hundredweight for U S No 1s and seek cost-cutting measures such as field sackaging for grading and re packing at distribution points.
Six Shafter High School graduates will share 1050 in scholarships at an awards assembly Wednesday. Grants Jensen noted the awards come from community organizations to aid education, with several named recipients including Pete Grossmann and two Rotary scholarship recipients.
Richland School prepares 191 upper graders for graduation next Thursday night on campus. Jerry Lauderdale serves as program chairman and master of ceremonies. Four eighth graders were chosen to give talks: Michael Steele, Patricia Cornell, Roselle Mettler, and Dorothy Weitz.
Hulda Voth of Riverside Avenue escaped loss of her home and garage after a Sunday fire. Neighbors arrived quickly, scaled the roof, and directed four hoses to the blaze. J W Pitts suffered first degree burns while fighting the flames. The group moved and rehung clothing to protect belongings. A fundraiser to replace Voths $450 electric motor car is organized by Mrs. George Mayer Route 1 Box 146B. Fire Captain T L Kin kaid noted insurance covered the house and garage but not the motor, with electrical wiring listed as the likely fire cause.
City officials denounced Assembly Constitutional Amendment 58 and AB 3320 seeking county control of city fire departments and exclusion for inhabited areas. City Clerk Frank Shaw warned the move encroaches on municipalities and urged protecting local rights amid a League of California Cities opposition.
Bakersfield firm Val ley Fire Alarm Co representatives demonstrated a home fire alarm system to Shafter officials. City Attorney Mortimore reminded the green river ordinance bans residential door-to-door solicitation. The firm may call in business districts. installation costs start at 230 dollars for four rooms plus 20 dollars per extra unit.
Veterans of World War I II and the Korean conflict join Wasco and Shafter for a joint Memorial Day observance. Downtown Shafter merchants close noon to 2 pm and some services close all day. a caravan will transport veterans from Wasco Cemetery to Shafter. American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars coordinate the event.
The Shafter Chamber seeks to double its 120 members in coming weeks with an all-out recruitment drive. Executive Secretary Ernie Hofman reports a plan to boost memberships through intensified individual contacts and a dedicated committee led by Chamber President L. J. Woodard.
Sgt Earl Millard, son of Mr George Ashbaugh of Shafter, is stationed at Kessler Air Force Base in Biloxi Mississippi after transfer from Hamilton Air Force Base in San Francisco. He attends six months of radio school in Mississippi with his wife Betty June Smith of Shafter.
Kern County growers gathered at Shafter Experimental Farm for an annual spud field day. Demonstrations covered potato fertilizer trials irrigation methods seed lots disease incidence and new harvesting machines that load potatoes directly into trucks. Agricultural extension service and seed grower associations sponsored the event with a Wasco park barbecue at noon.
Festival directors in Shafter begin reorganizing ahead of the 1954 celebration. Festival Secretary Ernie Hofman to notify organizations to appoint committees and alternates, with staggered two year terms proposed. Rotary's Jack Fleming resigns as festival chairman. new board to select a successor.
The San Francisco Bay will undergo two major surveys over three years. One by the State Water Project Authority, funded at 250000 dollars, and the other by the Army Corps of Engineers. Brig Gen C H Chorpening urged the fuller study after preliminary findings.
A B 29 visited Shafter dropping leaflets promoting the Ground Observer Corps. The craft circled twice, first north at about 1000 feet then south at about 800 feet. Leaflets warned of enemy bombers and casualty impacts. No unusual police calls were reported.
