Sheriff John Smith addressed the Wasco Elks Club on May 18, outlining law enforcement challenges linked to community growth. The talk highlighted policing needs and responses in expanding areas.
American Legion Post 213 will hold the Memorial Day ceremony Monday May 30 at 11 am at Shafter Cemetery. A Color Guard speaker firing squad and bugler will accompany the wreath laying with service clubs participating. Jo Ellen Cooper will play TAPS. Public invited. For info call Grady Bartlett 746-6568. Memorial wreaths available from local flower shops. Cemetery staff Tim Unruh praised.
Public meetings scheduled for June 6 8 and 9 1988 to discuss proposed changes to planning and permit fees by Kern County Department of Planning and Development Services. A 10 percent average increase is proposed for license and permit fees with July 21 1988 as the effective date.
