Graduates of Shafter High School prepare for graduation Thursday June 15 at 8 p.m. on the SHS football field. Buttonwillow Recreation and Park District announces a vacancy on the district board effective April 6. For more information call 764-5205.
The Shafter Cemetery asks that Memorial Day flowers not be placed before May 25 to aid preparations for the May 29 service at 10 a.m. Nomination deadlines for the Shafter Downtown Parking and Business Improvement Area Board include May 26 at 4 30 p.m. Contact John Guinn for questions. The Shafter High School Class of 1969 plans a July 22 1989 reunion and is seeking several members. The Shafter Stingrays Swim Club is accepting sign ups, with info at the district office. Shafter festival officials estimate attendance surpassed previous years as the event opened with the Shafter Junior Miss program at Shafter High School. Gretchen Handel passed her California Junior Miss title to Lisa Prous as Christiana Barnard and Suzanne Kern earned runner up positions and scholarships.
The City of Shafter seeks applicants to fill the remaining Planning Commission term expiring December 31, 1990. Residents within city limits aged 18 or older may submit a letter of interest detailing their qualifications. Letters due by May 31, 1989 to City Council 320 James St Shafter CA 93263.
The Shafter Press will close on Memorial Day May 29. Deadline changes include press information due by 12 noon May 25, classifieds by 3 p.m. May 26, all display ads by 12 noon May 25, and legal ads by 3 p.m. Friday. A mail slot is available for deliveries when offices are closed.
Brenda and Jimmy Thomas help launch People Against Child Abuse a Kern County auxiliary to raise funds for Kern Child Abuse Protection Council programs. The group will host a June fundraiser Black Tie Night at Bakersfield Community Theatre with a 25 donation. Contact Jimmy Thomas or Brenda Thomas for tickets.
