Shafter High School Opens After Bus Frustrations
In 1928 Shafter built its own high school after residents rejected the long bus ride to Bakersfield. W B Camp and local leaders rallied support, securing endorsements from Judge T N Harvey and Bakersfield editor Alfred Harrell. The bond passed, and Shafter High opened as classes began in a temporary site with about fifty students and two teachers, while the new building was under construction.
