Gypsum Use in Kern County Potatoes Cut Costs and Water Needs
Agricultural Extension records show Kern County potato growers buy and use about 300 tons of gypsum yearly, mostly for fields to be planted to potatoes. Applying gypsum to irrigation water can cut costs and improve soil penetration, with caution on sulfur levels to avoid reduced nitrogen uptake. The note also updates freezing storage guidelines and fruit dipping for better quality packaging.
