Memorial Day schedule and local meeting notice for Shafter
The Shafter Press will be closed Monday May 28 for Memorial Day with deadlines adjusted for the May 30 issue. The Shafter Collaborative of the Start Program meets May 23 from 6 to 7 30 pm at Richland Intermediate School with Rita Neri from Kern County Probation Department as guest speaker. Refreshments and childcare provided. For details call 746 8690. A SHS graduation is planned for Thursday June 7.

Remembering Shafter Marine Ralph Browner Hero of Betio Raid
The Shafter veteran Ralph Browner, a Marine awarded the Navy Cross and the Legion of Honor, recalls volunteering as a machine gunner to defend the Betio island position during the fierce 1944 assault in the Marianas. He and 276 men faced heavy Japanese fire, with only about 40 men able to walk off days later. Browner describes the brutal night and his role protecting the unit's flank as waves of attackers pressed the shoreline.

Minter Field to Honor Pearl Harbor Veterans Memorial
The Minter Field Air Museum sponsors a Pearl Harbor Memorial on Saturday June 2 at Shafter Airport Kathy's Airport Cafe banquet room 201 Aviation Street. The 10am event invites all veterans including Pearl Harbor veterans with a tribute to Newman who died May 14 with his family present to receive the salute.
