The second of three Sabin Oral polio immunization clinics will be held this weekend at Veterans Memorial Hall from 1 to 9 PM. County leaders expect high turnout and vaccine supplies will be sent via fire vehicles and sheriff cars with radio contact to Kern County Medical Society.
Robert Duane Wood son of Dr and Mrs R F Wi 444 Fabe Wood already a bachelor’s degree from La Sierra College Arlington California. Upon completion he may enter or seek a field of medical law and project from one to five years of residency at an approved hospital. Wood will be one of 93 seniors in the fifteenth commencement exercises the first since the College of Medical became a home.
The article notes Joe Burger’s talk on salesmanship at the annual Farm Bureau meeting and mentions Roger Thigman returning to Nebraska. It references ongoing preparations, a town celebration to inspire a stronger next year, and school year activities as seniors near graduation.

Two people died on Kern highways this week, bringing the year total to 50. The report notes the year-to-date toll matches the prior year’s pace, with one crash described as a loss of control that left a car overturned. Details on Watson’s injuries were unavailable at press time.

Eighteen polling places have been established in the Shafter area for the June 5 Stat Direct Primary election. The county clerk released a list with locations including Memorial Hall on California avenue and residences and businesses along Central Valley and nearby streets. A 14 year old Shafter area resident confessed to deputies and Shafter police that he carried out eight burglaries. Officers Knoy White Nixon Wilson worked to crack the case. The spree began May 3 with a first burglary at Richland School before the youth fled with minor items.
Plans for Shafter's Fourth of July event are announced by American Legion Post 213 and the Volunteer Fire Department. George Day will host via Channel 17 Bakersfield with guests Vicki Laverty, Miss Kern County 1962, and the Cotton Princess. Fireworks at the high school football field cap the evening.
Supervisors recognize and commend volunteers Mel Parrett Mel Vaux Nick Johnson Don Bellows Roy Bellows James Holt Don Burton L W Oxford Ralph Baehr and Wade Elliott for their service and commitment to the community. The action highlights appreciation from local officials for lifesaving efforts and neighborhood safety contributions.
