Budget session Drastic measures discussed
As the deadline to balance the fiscal 1986 budget approaches, Shafter City Council members discussed drastic measures. Proposals include a public safety tax, using general fund reserves, and sharing costs for Kern County Fire Station construction. If reserves are tapped, about 58,189 would be removed plus 35,000 for the fire station. Council members warned of reduced interest and long-term risk, urging cuts this year to stabilize finances.

Growth plan discussed by Richland school board
Trustees reviewed alternatives for handling district growth across three schools, considering larger classes or using external sites during peak enrollment. Lerdo Space was discussed, but already leased to Kern County. The board directed search for additional space at Maple and Rio Brave Greeley, and exploration of land donations for a future school. The calendar for 1985-86 was set with a four day weekend near February and planning for an August start in 1986-87. A counter-proposal to the CSEA offered a 4.5 percent pay hike, a Martin Luther King Jr holiday, and a layoff clause for future contracts, with no current layoffs anticipated.
