Drivers urged to belt up on Memorial Day weekend safety drive
The Greater Los Angeles Chapter National Safety Council urges drivers to wear safety belts and avoid alcohol during Memorial Day weekend. It cites alcohol as a factor in 49 percent of fatal crashes and notes about 50 percent of fatalities could be prevented with belts. Nationally over 22,000 annual deaths and $20 billion in costs are linked to alcohol related crashes. In California alcohol related crashes are a leading violent death cause and the top cause for ages 15 to 24 according to the council.
