Master Plan To Be Presented To Richland School Board
The May 9 committee meeting reviewed a draft master plan for growth in Shafter and Richland schools. Officials project 2,000 homes in Shafter and 3,000 to 4,000 more in the 7th Standard Road area with construction starting in 2008. The district plans modernization of Golden Oak Elementary, Redwood Elementary, and Richland Junior High, plus a new junior high and elementary school to ease overcrowding, funded by bonds, grants, and a Community Facilities District tax potentially $548 yearly for up to 40 years.

Paratroopers seek help locating last US Army Sgt Billy Mills
The 173d Airborne Brigade association asks locals to locate surviving family of former Sgt Billy Mills who last resided at 508 Acacia St Shafter Home of Record in June 1966. Mills deployed June 6 1966 from Oakland Terminal aboard USNS General John Pope with 4th Battalion 503rd Infantry. The unit served in Vietnam earning a Presidential Unit Citation and other honors. Local Kern County residents with information urged to contact Chapter XIV to present military documents to Mills family.

Jerry Schaefer longtime Shafter figure dies after cancer fight
Gerald E. Schaefer known as Jerry died May 9 2006 after years battling cancer and congestive heart failure He left a large family including wife Deena and children and was honored as EMT of the Year in 1993 and Citizen of the Year for Shafter in 1996 Funeral was held May 13 at Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church He supported Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society and was a prolific community figure in Kern County He served in the Navy and owned Jerry’s Pancake House Shafter Ambulance and other businesses and was a longtime member of the Shafter Elk’s Club.
