Residents of Shafter anticipate the May Festival celebrating the area’s rich farming heritage in the San Joaquin Valley. The piece praises local agriculture, service clubs, and charitable acts, noting farming's rewards and risks and urging community unity and future investment.
The 15th annual Shafter Lions Club Barn Dance occurs May 18 from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. at Hernstedt Farms in Shafter. EMS Week runs through May 18 with city kickoff May 17 at City Hall. The Shafter Historical Society and 4-H sponsor a Field of Dreams photo contest for K through 8 students with gift certificates as prizes.
The controversial Freedom Homes project in northeast Shafter is delayed until the next City Council meeting in two weeks after residents urged denial. If approved, the land behind a mobile home park on South Shafter Avenue may be used. concerns include traffic, school impacts, real estate prices, and crowding. The Redevelopment Agency already denied the request, and final council action will follow further public hearings.
A Shafter California team of 10 Valley Bible Church high school students earned bronze medals by reaching the semifinals in the national AVANA Bible Quiz and third place in the novice Olympics. Coaches were Steve Ambrose and Monica Powell. Team members include Anna Aldrich Chrissie Corrales Matt Fosdick Jennifer James Jordan Lewis Nathan Lewis Ryan Patrick Amanda Powell and Vince Searcy.
Police request public help in the abduction and murder of eight year old Maria Piceno who vanished March 27 1995 from Lemoore and was later found dead at Poso Creek north of Bakersfield. A modified Nova bowling ball with two dented thumb holes bearing Lois branding and marked weights was found near the body. The ball originated from Regency Lanes in Bakersfield.
Shafter resident Joshua Gowell Wilson was among the 51st commencement graduates of Fresno Pacific College, receiving a bachelor of arts in intellectual history with a chemistry minor and magna cum laude honors. He is a 1992 Shafter High School alum, son of Stan and Nancy Wilson, and attends Shafter Mennonite Brethren Church.
