Dr Lloyd N Morrisett presents a 314 page Richland School survey urging a $1.85 per $100 tax rate for several years to fund expansion. The report recommends a reserve fund of 100000 and an annual increase of about 52000 to meet enrollment growth, with plans for 18 classrooms four kindergartens a cafetorium and admin quarters to replace the old Santa Fe building and dust bowl cabins.

Miss Mary Margaret Revell Captures Torchbearer Rank
Mary Margaret Revell daughter of Dr and Mrs John Revell Beech Street was the sole recipient in the nation of the Leadership award at a Camp Fire Council program on Shafter High School fields. The event featured Torchbearer ranks awarded to an entire Camp Fire unit led by Mrs Dan Weitz and Mrs Lee Thomas with ten girls receiving pins. Others named include Paula Allen Patricia Jean Cornell Joan Lucille Eckmann Sharon Nusz Ruby Schultz Judy Schultz Jean Thomas June Thompson Dorothy Weitz. The local unit is noted as one of the few nationwide to have all members reach Torchbearer rank simultaneously. Beads were given for completed tasks to 2133 girls with Bluebirds transitioning to Camp Fire under supervision of several leaders.

First tree planted in Shafter by Co S Roby in 1902
Co S Roby, 82, retired railroader from Tulare, recalls planting an umbrella tree at Shafter in 1902. He lived there 16 months as section boss for Sante Fe Railway before moving to Wasco. Roby, then with wife and two children, fought rattlesnakes and checked irrigation. Now retired in Tulare, he visits for Saturday celebration.
