Shortening Baseball Games Draws Mixed Reactions
Umpires sponsors and owners push for faster games with altered rules. Breaks between half innings are limited to two minutes five seconds, longer on national telecasts. Pitchers get 12 seconds to throw when the batter is ready, and mound visits shorten. Critics say few seconds saved, plus calls for consistent strike zones. The essay ends with a provocative aside comparing baseball to sex and a joke about a new pill causing delays.
