Local students win Fair Housing Contest in Kern County
Lizette Sanchez Priscila Razo Dalila Castillo and Yvonne Trujillo from Janet Johnsons language arts class earned first place in the America the Home of Opportunity contest hosted by Kern County Realtors. Their model town showed diverse races coexisting with schools ball fields and community life. They received college money and a trophy at an awards dinner at Hodels.

Atkinson Wins Teresa Corti Scholarship At Banquet
Local student Melanie Atkinson won the Teresa Corti Scholarship and was named one of the county’s top students at Kern Agricultural Foundation’s May 3 annual Scholarship Awards Banquet. Event spokesman Mine Kovacevich praised the county’s agriculture focus and noted donors including the Corti Family Agricultural Scholarship Fund Kern County Farm Bureau and Bakersfield Californian among others.

Death notices: Mary Aguilar and William Anders
Long time Shafter resident Mary Aguilar died in Chico after a cancer battle. She attended Richland schools and worked at Shafter Headstart and Californian Care Center. Survived by sons Adrian and Frankie Aguilar, siblings, and special friend Esther Armendariz. A private ceremony planned. Also, graveside service for William Henry Anders, 72, held at Shafter Memorial Park with Pastor Pat Coyle officiating. He was born in Pep Texas, worked as a truck driver, and is survived by wife Thelma and children Janice, James, and grandchildren.
