Five Hurt In Shafter Collision At Los Angeles and Poplar
Five people were hospitalized in serious condition after a Friday evening crash at the intersection of Los Angeles and Poplar avenues near Shafter. Kenneth Dunn and his wife Dana Dunn, both 33, and their children Douglas William, 10, and Kirk Eugene, 8, were taken to North Kern Medical Center in Wasco. Rose Miller, 21, a passenger in the other car, also went there. A 1953 Dodge driven by James Hubert Succow struck the Dunn vehicle, with Succow cited for failure to yield. Later reports said Dunn and Douglas were sent home, Kirk and Dana Dunn were in satisfactory condition, and Miller was transferred to Kern General in satisfactory condition.

The City Council will revisit the business license ordinance at the regular meeting on Monday May 13 at City Hall. If enacted by July 1 it must pass by the 21st meeting. Businessmen are invited to attend and share views as the panel also weighs garbage service rate hikes.
Flag Stealing Charges Filed Against Three
John Wilbur Perry faced a $52.50 fine on a minor consuming charge after pleading not guilty to a stolen property charge. Richard Leroy Sidwell and Ronald Dickenson were arrested Saturday night with a flag in their car. Sidwell posted a $325 bond. Dickenson pleaded guilty to stealing the flag and was sentenced by Judge Blake Witcher to 10 days or a $52.50 fine.

Shafter Parade Draws Thousands with 170 Entries
Shafter staged one of its finest parades Saturday May 4 drawing thousands. Ed Wimpy Bender and Cliff Ratzlaff organized entry lists that grew to about 170, closing on time with lines A through F, the Mills Flying Service, and a police motorcycle demo. Awards went to Mennonite Brethren float, Tops Market entry, and others, as Grand Marshal Charles Hitchcock rode a horse. Local honors included the Woods Stone Cadillac pioneer award and various religious and industrial trophies.

Injured Bakersfield Man Rushed After Santa Fe Way Crash
Taylor Nelson, 42, of 222 Hays Street Bakersfield, was rushed to Kern General Hospital in serious condition after a Sunday crash on Santa Fe Way south of Beech Avenue near Sigafter. Jones Ambulance of Shafter responded. Nelson reportedly swerved into a borrow pit and struck a telephone pole while driving north toward Shafter. He was cited for unsafe speed and driving on the wrong side. Nelson, a laborer for Gale Bros. of Lakeview, was driving a Plymouth which was demolished.
