St. Therese Catholic Church announces summer service hours beginning May 6 with Mass Saturdays at 5 30 p m and Sundays at 8 and 10 a m Confession will be Saturdays 4 15 to 5 15 p m The church is located at 300 West Lerdo.
Samarripas of 550 Crumb Street is Nelia Samarri pas a senior at Shafter High School. She plans to attend Federico's Beauty College after graduation. Her escort is Ricardo Garcia. Phyllis Rodriguez daughter of Mr and Mrs Joe A Rodriguez of 29126 Los Angeles Avenue is 17 and a junior at Shafter High School. After graduation she plans to attend beauty college. She is a member of Chicano Club of Shafter.
Word spreads beyond Shafter that the event is the county’s main activity. A friend in another community noted last week that it is “the week of your big festival,” signaling strong local interest and anticipation.
Shafter High School begins preregistration for next year led by vice principal Neil Olson. Counselors visit junior highs in the Shafter district for preliminary signups as early registration targets over 900 students. New courses will be available in the fall to support schedules and teacher assignments.
In Shafter a surge in home building and rising business activity accompanies new tenant moves. Beno's Department Store locates in the former Safe Way building signaling a trend, Coast to Coast Store expands into Hemingson’s old quarters, and Thurston Hunt of Central Valley Ford leases the Garratz building on Lerdo for Shafter Ford Agency moving from Central Avenue. Hunt notes the current site is too small.
Nine members of the First Church of the Nazarene at 411 W Lerdo plan to attend the 11th annual Central California District assembly in Fresno on Sunday May 6. The church bus leaves at 12 30 p m for services at 3 and 6 30 p m with no local evening service that day. Honored guests include Dr Shelburne Brown Pasadena College president and evangelist and Dr W H Lewis Church of the Nazarene general superintendent and evangelist. The Joyful Noise trio will provide inspirational singing. Local attendees include Rev and Mrs Holt Bertie Osborn Renda Kern Vern Kern Estella Ragsdale Lois Lovell Essie Bell and Natricia Hurst.
Festival organizers expect up to 70 entries for the Whiskerine Contest and parade awards. Miss Shafter Susan Franklin will present ribbons and trophies at Stringham Park after the parade, with Kiwanis drawing prizes a Yamaha Mini Enduro and a ten speed bike. Later, Boosters Club barbecue runs from 4 p.m. to evening as United Chicano Club provides afternoon entertainment. Sunday features a 2 p.m. church program with local choirs and duets culminating in His People Singers and Revivalaires performances.
