Cinco de Mayo fest planned with parade and park fun
Cinco de Mayo celebration set for Shafter features a 10 a.m. parade from Richland Junior High on May 4 with the theme A Heritage of Heroes. Grand marshals are Mexican American veterans from La Colonia. At Manuel Park after the parade, food booths, crafts, and a Kid Corner with petting zoo and mini carnival await, plus youth mariachi groups and performances by local bands. Grupo Folklorico Oyohualli will perform dances from Tamaulipas Yucatan and Jalisco. director Lupe De LaRosa emphasizes authentic costumes. Call 746-4352 for details.

Bill Goertzen remains highly active at eighty, a longtime Shafter resident described as constantly busy. He says he has always been a collector, a habit rooted before moving to Shafter in 1933 from Dodge City, Kansas during the Dust Bowl migration.

Trustees pick school principals in RLSD vote
The Richland Lerd School District Board unanimously chose Rose Shannon for the primary school and Manuel Gonzalez for the junior high, with their terms starting in the 1996 97 school year. Shannon, a 24 year RLSD employee, will lead K 3 while Gonzalez comes from Shafter High School to head 7 8.
