Shafter Potato Festival Parade Adds Bands and Queen Entries
Ticket sales start April 1 as the Shafter Potato Festival adds six parade entries including Bakersfield High School Driller Band and Wasco Elementary School Band. New queen entrants are Jo Ann McKenpie Bakersfield Alice Lugue Sie Stinnett and Carmen Palomo of Shafter. Final queen entry date is March 31 with a kickoff buffet at LaVerne Jacobs 266 Faber Ave Shafter. Prizes donated by merchants include a home freezer TV set dishwasher washing machine shotgun and bike.

Kern County permits soar in first two months of year
Kern County building activity for January and February sets a record with 1129 permits valued at 8,358,142 dollars, up 38.3 percent from 1953 and 93 percent from 1952. New residences totaled 675 permits worth 3,713,804 dollars, vs 354 permits last year. Clifton Clemens calls the pace a sign of continued high payrolls.

Acreage Figures Drop In Effort To Beat Surplus
J Waldo Unruh president of the Kern County Potato Growers Association told delegates at the convention that Kern growers will plant 27 percent fewer acres of potatoes this year. A resolution urged California Idaho Washington and Oregon growers to join in reducing acreage to prevent market chaos and prior price downturns. The group also urged selective handling of potatoes to market and warned against boosting 1954 plantings by blocking Section 32 funds.

Shafter Teacher Henry Moroski Earns First Year Honor
New York born Henry Moroski known as Hank is named Shafter High School teacher of the week after a standout first year. He teaches social science to freshmen and builds a scrappy basketball program that improved from four league losses to beating nearly all rivals. Moroski grew up in Brooklyn, studied at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, married a professor’s daughter, trained at Stanford, and now resides at Kern Homes with his wife and two children.

Return trip after seven weeks in South Dakota

PTA Drive Ends With 938 New Members

Spud Fire Biggest In Shafter Since Justesen’s Blaze
A $6,000 blaze gutted the Spud Cafe at 341 Central Avenue Shafter last week. Fire Chief Ed Bender called it the city’s most dangerous fire since the Justesen incident, with heavy use of hoses and multiple engines. Vernon Pierce aided in saving the Jewel Box nearby, and local staff helped operate lighting and containment efforts.

I Fleming Injury Report Diminishes After Fall From Car
