Shafter Vision and Goals group struggles to reach consensus on target dates while expanding citizen involvement. A community meeting was postponed to April 19 at 7 p.m. in Shafter Veterans Hall, as concerns on inclusion, information flow and growth levels were raised by attendees and speakers.

Chief Knox resigns as Shafter Police Chief
Shafter Police Chief Gary Knox resigned effective Thursday March 15 after being placed on paid administrative leave. City Manager Wade McKinney named assistant chief Greg Greeson interim. Knox joined the department in 1986 and held the $47,000 annual chief post since January while also serving as chief of corrections. He was to oversee a new return-to-custody detention facility under construction.

Teachers and aides support ESL students at SHS
At Shafter High School ESL class, Gaylene Chow leads five groups daily with three assistants and 30 students per period. The program serves two native languages, Spanish and Arabic, while focusing on culture and translating tasks. Coordinators say staff training improves LEP instruction as content classes remain challenging to teach in ESL.
