Pay Telephone Costs Rise In California
Public pay phones across California now require a dime or two nickels per local call as of this month. The three percent monthly bill surcharge for regular subscribers was dropped to fund the needed revenue while about 70 000 public phones are being converted to 10 cent operation. About 15 000 devices are in San Francisco on East Bay. Manager T F Blair says equipment changes sped up the removal of the surcharge, ahead of the eight month window set by the California Public Utilities Commission last October.
