City seeks interim Police Chief as Lt. O'Brien nears retirement
City Administrator Bill Sheldon says an interim chief is needed after Lt. Earl O'Brien announced retirement plans for March 16 with stay through April 1. Options include bringing in an outside chief, a retired official, or a police consulting firm. The SPCA says they will support the Council’s chosen candidate, and negotiations aim to wrap up in days for a March 23 council vote.

Richland School District Board Action Notes Meetings
The Richland School District Board of Trustees voted unanimously to expel two students after a closed session. No parents attended, and no public speakers appeared at hearings on the board’s counterproposals to teacher and CSEA contracts. A parent questioned the budget, including 26000 for travel and 700 for subscriptions. The board approved Public Schools Week from April 6 to 10 and noted most activities would be at month end. Gifts of 300 from Shafter Rotary Club and 250 from the Richland PTA supported a Jr. High Proficiency Lab carpet purchase. Enrollment stood at 1627, up 77 from last year, with recent slight decline but a large student increase anticipated soon.
