Maple school trustees call a special election for Friday April 9 at the school polling place from 1 to 5 pm to decide a $65,000 bond issue. Funds would buy land and buildings, renovate facilities, cover maintenance and equipment, and improve school grounds with $1000 denominations at five percent interest.
Announcement by N. D. Hudson, farm adviser, calls all farmers in the Shafter district to gather Friday night at the American Legion hall at 9 o'clock. The session will discuss the 1937 agriculture conservation program and election of a 1937 community committee. Everyone is urged to attend and bring a neighbor.
Troop 41 members undertook their first outdoor cooking hike on a muddy Saturday. Planned for Painted Rock in San Luis Obispo County, rain damaged roads forced a switch to a camp site about twenty miles west of McKittrick. Scouts formed two groups, set up staff tables, and prepared a cooked menu with defined roles.
Plans for the Shafter Theatre call for seating over 700 and a modern full setup. Frank Panero of Delano announced double shifts next week to speed completion once bids and final plans arrive from the architects.
Biola Women's Chorus from the Bible Institute of Los Angeles will perform at the Mennonite Brethren church on Wednesday noon March 24. Shafter sisters Viola Sudermann and Sarah Balzer join 30 other singers in the 82-voice group directed by Herbert G. Tovey. The program includes dinner at 11:30 prior to the concert.
The Christian Leader, the first English paper from the Mennonite Brethren Conference, appears in Shafter. Rev. Wm Bestwater writes two monthly departments: The Prophetic Corner for youths and Recollections and Observations on philosophy. The publication follows last year’s Reedley conference resolution.
Mrs Verna May Chinnis died Monday after a severe Sunday crash on Shafter highway. She is buried in Shafter cemetery after services at Janzen Funeral Home led by Rev Wm Bestwater. Survived by 10 year old daughter Louise husband E J Chinnis parents J F Peek, three sisters and seven brothers.
The Kern County Coordinating Council will meet at the Bakersfield court house on Friday March 19 to draft the 1937 soft ball schedules and discuss juvenile recreation issues. Ray Dye represents Shafter at the meeting.
Shafter high school's Future Farmers of America hosts a 3 pm preview on campus for 35 hogs heading to the Inter-State Junior Livestock show in South San Francisco March 21 to 25. Participants include Wallace Loewen and Milton Nickkel among others. prizes offered for best animals and best showmanship. More than 1000 hogs will compete from California Utah and Oregon after the local event.
Harry A. Hopkins, leading candidate for Congress from the Tenth District, visited Shafter yesterday while residing in Taft. Hopkins, former state highway commission chair and Taft stalwart, helped name Taft, served as postmaster, built the town’s first water system, and sat on the first city council with mayoral tenure. He led the California Ice Company on the West Side for several years.

Palm Sunday will be celebrated by the Mennonite Brothern with three churches Shafter Rosedale and Bakersfield joining in a mission festival. Preachers include Rev. Wm J Bestwater Rev J D Hofer and Rev P N Hiebirt with a large Sunday school program.
A safety cage is being built around the water tower ladder. A new sign reading Shafter has been painted on the tower structure.
The 1937 Liebrand Brothers Piccadilly Circus opened a four day stand in Shafter featuring 18 acts. Sponsored by the Shafter American Legion, the show runs tonight through Saturday with aerialists, performing dogs, ponies, and two bands. Free tickets for children 14 and under are available from The Shafter Press at the newspaper office.
The Boys' letter club revised the block system for athletic awards and will exclude class C men. Varsity letters will be 17 inch blocks, middleweights 5 inch blocks, and C members a Cardinal S. Varsity stars go to Mike Janzen Jack White Tommy Dorris and Marvin Potter.
George F. Harrison of the United States Experimental Farm spoke at the Rio Bravo Farm Bureau meeting on Thursday night. He presented two planting methods debinting with sulfuric acid and undelinting, recommending undelinting as more successful and economical.
Shafter now has four fire zones with a four light signal atop the water tower. One light marks zone one and four lights mark zone four, signaling the approximate fire location. Zone 1 covers the triangle bounded by Lerdo road and Central avenue including the Nickel and Stone tracts. Zone 2 is northeast of the tracks. Zone 3 covers the Stone tract from Central avenue to Lerdo road. Zone 4 includes North Shafter and Myrick's corner.
Funeral services for Mrs Katherine Unruh were set for Friday at 2 PM at the Mennonite Brothern church with Rev William J Bestwater officiating. Interment followed at Shafter Cemetery. Mrs Unruh, a 16 year Shafter resident, died Tuesday aged 56 or 67. She was predeceased by husband Dan. She is survived by two
Winners in the eighth grade Americanism essay contest at Richland grammar school were announced. Hilda Wesner won first place and Sarah Paloma took second. essays will be honored at June graduation with pen and pencil sets. The Shafter American Legion Auxiliary sponsored the contest. A separate piece notes Shafter will host a Kern County wildflower show on Easter Sunday March 28 with promotional efforts by the Chamber of Commerce to lure visitors and possible Governor attendance.
