Ensign Ruben Mettler U S Navy arrived in Shafter for a two week leave before reporting to Norfolk Maine for further training. He graduated from Midshipman’s school in New York on March 8 and received a sword from the New York Yacht Club as one of two students honored. He previously graduated from Cal Tech in Pasadena with an engineering degree and is the son of Mr and Mrs Henry F Mettler of this city.

Religious Education Program Reduces Delinquency in Shafter
Rev Menno Schellenberg told Shafter Kiwanis Club that five hundred students now attend Released Time Religious Education classes. The program lowers juvenile delinquency with volunteer teachers under Mrs Chris Ummel. Forty percent of attendees do not belong to any church and no creed is taught.

Birthday Party Honors Two Pioneers in Isabella Homestead
A Sunday birthday gathering at the T. V. Little home marks Ed Little’s 87th and S. P. Heise’s 82nd birthdays in Isabella Manitoba. Heise, a boyhood friend of Little’s, traveled from Canada on a 9000 mile journey to Mexico City and beyond, noting the trip cost him 108 dollars. Heise says travel is unmatched and has enjoyed every moment of the voyage.

Party Honors Arnold Morss at Bank Dinner
The local Bank of America branch held a dinner Tuesday evening at the Shafter Motel to honor A. J. Morss assistant cashier who is being transferred to Ocean Beach. Bank staff, Mrs. Cramp ton, Mrs. Morss, and Richard attended. Elbert Franz sang, with remarks by Glen Crampton and Morss. The Morss family plans to move next week to their new home.

Casteel Serves in France With Meritorious Unit Plaque
Pfc. Earl S. Casteel of Shafter serves in the Third Division's 3rd Medical Battalion which earned the Meritorious Service Unit Plaque for its duty during the Anzio breakthrough and the fall of Rome. The unit fought across seven campaigns from French Morocco to the Rhine, providing medical support on the Anzio beachhead under heavy fire.
