She has been deputy county clerk since 1927 and was unanimously appointed to take over duties by the Board of Supervisors after 25 years in the clerk 39 s office.
The town reports a successful enforcement of overtime parking with 45 tickets issued in the first week and a decline thereafter. Motorists request raising James Street parking from one to two hours, while council buys a new patrol car for 1750 dollars including trade-in. Peters Jr the president of the Shafter Wasco Irrigation district was elected chairman of the Kern County Water Commission Monday night He replaces Ford Frick of Arvin who was elected vice president of the organization The commission serves as an advisory body on water to the Board of Supervisors.
Two Shafter School students, Jack and Isabel Vasquez, won first places in Lions Speaking contests. Jack Brown took district honors for the area on March 5, while Isabel Vasquez won Buttonwillow area recognition. District eliminations follow in spring with top prize a 1500 scholarship and three 500 awards for runners up.
Farmers from Wasco will be guests of the Shafter Center of the Kern county farm bureau Friday night at 7 30 at the Veterans Memorial hall. David Anderson, chairman of the local group announced the meeting was called to obtain information on how to set up a nitrogen fertilizer cooperative in this area.
Mrs. Margarita E Rodriguez 67 of 30717 Burbank died March 9 at home after 39 years in Shafter. Rosary was held Tuesday night at Armstrong mortuary and Mass Wednesday at St. Therese's. Burial in Shafter cemetery. Survivors include husband Juan six sons six daughters a brother and 34 grandchildren.
Robert A. Farrell 39 former chief criminal trial attorney and county trial counsel announces candidacy for Kern County District Attorney. He pledges alert aggressive prosecution, cites eight years as DA trial counsel and special grand jury work plus commendations from district attorneys. He graduated USC Law 1948 and joined public service before private practice.
The Merchants division of the Shafter chamber of commerce and agriculture praised the police department Tuesday night for enforcing the city's overtime parking ordinance. The action aimed to free street space for shoppers.
Richland Mixed Choirs String and Full Orchestras earned Superior ratings at the Central California Music Festival held at Harvey Auditorium. Sixth Grade Mixed Chorus directed by Martha Eckler and Richland Singers led by Richard Southwick also received top marks in sight reading. Spring concerts are planned with Fourth Grade Mixed Chorus on April 15 and Ordihes plus Seventh and Eighth Grade choruses performing April 22 at Shafter High School Auditorium.

Bakersfield postmaster and former Kern County sheriff John Loustalot will speak to the Lions Club about the governor’s Conference on Youth. He has long worked with local youth as a former teacher and in law enforcement. The club will not meet March 19 but joins others in Oildale on March 18 with President Reg Hammond presiding.
Sam Becker, secretary of the organization, announced that a March 17 meeting of the Shafter Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture was cancelled due to conflicts.
City leaders tonight instructed the attorney to draft an ordinance to curb obscene magazines and periodicals at local news stands. Eight organizations including the Woman’s Club and American Legion auxiliary pressed for action to shield youth, with the measure likely to be introduced in two weeks.
Shafter High School bands orchestra and mixed chorus earned top marks at Kern County Music Festival held at Bakersfield High School. The orchestra gained superior, the mixed chorus good, and the band excellent under Larry Weiss. Carol Barton earned a superior rating on a Handel viola solo with pianist Genevieve Vaughn.
The Boy Scout Coffee Hour at Veterans Memorial hall on March 22 offers a bale of cotton as a prize. The event runs 9 to 11 a.m. and is the scouts annual fundraising drive for the Scout building. The Shafter Generals host the Garces Rams Friday at 3 00 PM for their South Se quoia League baseball opener. Earlier this week Shafter lost two of three, falling 13 4 to Arvin and dropping to Taft after leading 4 1 through four innings.
Scout Troop 913 stages a Friday variety show at Shafter High School Auditorium. George Day hosts a diverse program with dance, song, magic and music. acts include Claudean Moreland with a flaming baton, Mickey Hooper, Ruth Kidd, Jerri Jones, and a 40 minute Al Robbins magic finale. Proceeds fund camping gear for the troop, now 32 members, tickets $1 adults 50c children.
The Business and Professional Women's club began a door to door voter registration drive. Chairwoman Clara J. Schnidt said members will visit residents to enroll eligible voters for the June primaries. She noted city election registration closes soon, with canvass continuing until April 10.
In the sixth Arvin pulled away as seven Bears crossed the plate while Armendariz tripled with two outs but could not score. Wendell Cates and Jim Prender added Generals hits before Lemoore handed a 16 to 6 loss in another game.
