Quick action by city and county firefighters averted greater disaster when a flash fire engulfed the Chevron service station at Central Valley and Lerdo. Ronald Perry, an employee, was cleaning the grease rack area when an explosion occurred. A 25 gallon butane bottle and a 500 gallon storage tank nearby increased the risk. Perry escaped unharmed and could not identify the fire’s origin. Damage was estimated at about 5000 dollars to the structure and 1500 dollars in contents. Fire units remained on scene about an hour.
