City Council Debates MiSwaco Services and Summer Education
Council discusses AT&T phone service for the MiSwaco site with a 4 363 29 fee and city reimbursement. MiSwaco funds 900000 for off site improvements. Three summer education projects considered include a 14950 computer lab with 30 netbooks, 33000 reading camp for five weeks at Veteran s Hall, and a five week kindergarten readiness program serving 90 children in Richland Schools.

A volunteer reading program includes about 20 Shafter High School students who visit Sequoia Elementary weekly to read to younger pupils, averaging 40 to 50 kindergartners and first graders each session.

The Shafter Press and Wasco Tribune plan relocation after a February 24 fire. Sales Manager Jason Reed is securing a new office at 406 Central Avenue, Shafter, while staff operate from Reed Print, Inc. Bakersfield. Archives are stored at Beale Memorial Library with microfilm and print copies, and a project to add valley papers to newsarchives.com may take two years.
