Julie Strauss Named Girl's State Representative at Shafter High
Shafter High School junior Julie Strauss was chosen by the Shafter American Legion Auxiliary to represent her school at the Girl's State conclave at a Claremont college from June 26 to July 2. The program, in its 75 plus year run, trains girls to simulate city, county, and state government, choose parties, and participate in mock trials and a state Governor election, with daily activities and a final court address.

Pocket Bike Fatality and Suspected Violent Incidents Reported
The Bakersfield area reports a pocket bike crash at Wilson Road left Jerome Coston dead at Kern Medical Center. A vehicle fled the scene. alcohol may have been a factor. Other items include a reckless firearm discharge at 336 Louella Street with a suspect, Abel Velasco Ramirez, arrested after resisting arrest and a stolen handgun recovered. A SWAT callout for a fentive fugitive, Roddy Guzman, was unsuccessful, leaving him at large. Monkeys charged at Animal Haven escaped, injuring two workers. two were killed by staff and airlifted responders are on scene. Fish and Game officers en route.
