California Education Officials Debate Teacher Role Levels
The California Board of Education examines Allen’s plan for a four tier teacher structure with ranks from assistant to professor, salaries from 12 000 to 60 000, and contracts for top ranks. The proposal aims to reduce top salaries, encourage younger staff, and keep capable teachers from leaving the classroom. A pilot in Temple City Unified is planned, with estimated annual costs for transition teachers and 5 000 daily attendees. Concerns include staff responsibilities, transitions, training changes, and potential over compensation during the shift. The board seeks new funding or reallocations after Johnson’s re study.
