A Shafter man Oscar Carl Lundgren was arrested after police found marijuana in his apartment and later allegedly threatened a prosecution witness Butch Buster Smith. Lundgren, released on bail after a narcotics charge, again faced detention for the threat. Congresswoman Bob Mathias announced 7.58 million dollars for the 18th District under General Revenue Sharing, with Kern County receiving 3.96 million, Bakersfield 811 thousand, Delano 100 thousand, and Shafter 28 thousand.

The Buttonwillow mayoral contest drew 84 880 votes across five candidates as women boosted turnout with benefit events and prizes. A 498-person crowd filled the Buttonwillow School Auditorium for final campaign skits while Lyndon Payne became 1971 Chamber of Commerce president, succeeding Arthur Ghilar ducci.
