Richland Intermediate School held a Feb 23 spelling bee under national rules. First place in each grade advances to district, then Kern County, then Washington DC. certificates awarded to all. Four junior high students competed in Shafter Lions Club annual speech contest on February 24 with over 50 in attendance. Vicki Bernardi won first place earning $50 for her speech on loving life in Shafter. Patricia Martinez took second with a talk on teens and alcohol. Cathy Riccomini placed third with a speech on earthquakes. Felicia Oesterle earned $25 for her Description speech. Judges included Ann Paslay John Leonard and Bill Cummings. timekeeper was Tim Jones.
