The Shafter Schools Project partners with Richland School District to run The Great Summer Reading Race and Summer Reading Fun. Students read books, submit reports, and can win prizes like an iPod while Golden Oak Elementary hosts daily activities from June 13 to July 11, 8am to 12pm, excluding July 4, with 58 kids on opening day.

Generals Open golf fundraiser supports Shafter High sports
The Generals Open golf tourney raised funds for all Shafter High athletic programs aiming to net 7000 to 8000 dollars. Over 70 attendees, 60 hole sponsors and community support backed the event with proceeds benefiting student athletes. winners were Brad Everett et al for low gross and Darren Isaacs et al for low net.

Motorcyclist Killed On Highway 99 Near Lerdo
A 22-year-old motorcyclist died in a June 20 crash on Highway 99 south of Lerdo Highway. Traveling at high speed, the rider swerved, left the roadway, struck a roadside call box and a large road sign, and was ejected. Pronounced dead at the scene. Alcohol not a factor. Identity withheld pending family notification.
