Emory Gay Hoffman of the Kern County Chamber of Commerce organized a goodwill potato distribution from Shafter. A 10 pound sack from Em H Mettler and Son will be given to the Shriner representing each state and each foreign country at the Los Angeles convention. Hoffman travels from Shafter to the event to meet state and foreign delegates.

Flying saucers sighted by Shafter residents
Rancher Arthén Nightengale and his wife and four year old daughter Beverly watched mysterious flying saucers near Shafter last evening. They described four shiny craft in perfect formation about 3000 feet up as the sun set, moving faster than airplanes.

Golden West Avenue Work Completed in Shafter Street Upgrade

Crews finished lowering the Golden West avenue crown by about eight inches, re-oiling and resurfacing, with man hole inspections underway. Marvin Weidenbach newly elected president of the Shafter 20 30 Club will be installed at a joint service with Delano and Oildale at 2 p m Sunday. Three Mathis Sons Honored in San Jose Memorial Rites
Mrs Ida Mathis attended a cornerstone laying at San Jose State College for a $50,000 memorial chapel. Inside the cornerstone are records of four of her sons including Lt Jim Mathis Capt Joe Mathis and Maj Jack Mathis the latter killed May 15 1945 on Okinawa and posthumously cited. Joe Mathis a San Jose graduate served with Marine air engineers and witnessed the Hiroshima blast. Jim Mathis an 88th Fighter Squadron pilot served with Patton in Africa and Anzio earning a Bronze Star. Jerry Mathis a Stanford graduate awaits two years of Marine service. the other son is non veteran.

Agricultural Inspector Ned Tt reports a sharp drop in shipments as four Shafter sheds halt work amid poor prices a railroad strike and reefer shortages. Through Tuesday 4675 cars compared with 5692 last season plus 600000 sacks remain unsent. Onions total 52 cars with some sacks moved by truck as reefer shortages force reallocation. Prices rose to about 1.85 per 100 pounds from 1.50 last period.
