Union Oil moves toward expanding production in the Shafter field with a new 11-34 location announced 660 feet west of the 10-34 well. Drilling at 10-34 progressed since June 13 with surface casing set and depth reaching 4101 feet.
Superior crews at Fink No 1 in the Shafter oil field drilled 1050 feet to reach 9500 feet in 21 days. The well spudded on May 30 with heavy equipment, aiming to beat the Union record of 9700 feet in 24 days and 52 days for depth.
E B Stringham was elected to the board of directors of the Shafter Rotary club at a regular meeting held Tuesday at Cafe Neuman. He will fill the seat left by Orvin Mettler who becomes club president next month. Guests included Sam Lachenmaier James Nealis and visiting Rotarians Jack Bass Harry Hopkins W B Camp Andy Alderson and Walter Mortensen.
Experimental farm data from 1931 shows Virginia Coke peanuts yielding 3638 pounds per acre, with Jumbo 3500 and Improved Spanish 3475 pounds. Costs at Shafter are higher than in the south, but processing locally and economical farming could make the crop viable. University of California experiments seek a new suited peanut variety for commercial prospects.
Emil Goehring and county farm advisor representatives run an experiment at the Goehring ranch to dry cull potatoes in the sun for potential use as livestock feed. Cull spuds are sliced, laid out to dry, then possibly milled or fed directly with salt or molasses as options. The project targets calves, cattle, hogs and chickens with no promises of commercial viability. three carloads have been processed and more drying is planned while farmers observe progress.
Shafter long white potatoes carried Kern county pride to the San Francisco exposition on Treasure Island. About 12 000 visitors toured the Kern county exhibit and 30 000 pounds of fried spuds were served. County officials led by W. H. Hitchcock and 1 100 residents attended. Stanley Abel spoke on agriculture mining and oil wealth and tax rates. Abel turned on a central switch in a finale. Potatoes traveled to the fair by truck and on the Valley Flier train with potato stickers on dining cars.
4 H club members from Kern and Madera counties will hold an outing and camp at Whitaker forest July 3 to 8. Other sections of the state have outings at intervals throughout the summer.
The Shafter spud market stayed firm as demand remained at 85 cents to 1 dollar per unit. Sales of U S No 1 long whites reached a dollar with most estimates near 90 cents, while rail shipments totaled 874 cars and season totals climbed to 3 527 cars.
H Midgley longtime Shafter business figure and city council member suffered severe hand injuries Thursday evening when a Butane tank fell on his fingers at the Andrew Schultz ranch. One finger was severed at the first joint and another broken. he remained home several days and has since recovered mobility.
Cool weather delays harvesting on Shafter Farms Lerdo holdings. Picking, planned to start Tuesday, is postponed until week end. Harvest likely to begin before next week and continue into the following week with peak activity around the month’s first.
Representative A. J. Elliott states the agricultural appropriations bill will reach Congress next week. It includes a section to boost consumption of surplus farm products including cotton by subsidizing exports.
A Bakersfield superior court hearing on Shafter disincorporation was continued to next Monday. City attorney A P Thanneson will represent council members and answer Joseph Subriar s petition demanding an immediate election on disincorporation or show cause why not. Subriar initiated the action last week. Continuous delay follows prior petitions and clerk findings about insufficient signatures.
Members of the Shafter Business Men's Association will tour the Shafter oil field tomorrow evening as guests of Superior Oil company officials. The inspection, led by Don Koch and R A Daugherty, will visit the absorption plant and an active drilling site, lasting about one hour after a 5 PM meetup at Bank of America corner.
Gil Guthrie a Shafter former national midget auto racing champion sustained a broken shoulder and two broken fingers when Jackie Seares drove into Guthrie’s car causing it to flip before landing on its wheels. Seares also injured in the collision as Guthrie trailed in third during the main event after winning a heat and a semi final.
Nine suspects were arrested with no arrests made as yet in the Lerdo road Sly and Unruh service station robbery. About 50 dollars in cash and 250 dollars in checks were taken after a rear glass panel was broken. Oliver Sly and truckers Dick Kirkpatrick and Paul Andrews notified police, with Chief Murray Arnold handling the case. A related break in at George Witcher’s home on Central avenue in Shafter yielded 360 dollars sought by thieves. Police believe both incidents are connected. arrests have been made and released.
Rail shipments this week totaled three cars, lifting the season total to 62 cars. Over the past two weeks rail traffic was light. For the week ending June 9, 3,034 sacks and 2,163 lugs of whites left by truck, and shipments of yellows totaled 365 sacks.
George Castle of an auto camp north of Shafter was hurt Tuesday evening in a collision at the Lerdo road and 99 highway intersection. He sustained an injured arm and a severe scalp wound and was treated by a local doctor after Highway Patrol investigation.
Gener eum corporation says Van Ness No 2 in the Shafter oil field section 2 29 25 should be completed Friday pending a successful water shutoff shoe test. Casing is cemented to 11 465 feet with bottom depth listed at 11 491 feet. Core tests indicate a westernward thinning sand toward the field edge and possible further western drilling prospects along Seventh Standard road from No 4. General Petroleum plans Caldwell No 5 offsetting Superior's Helbling on the field's eastern edge.
Paving crews pour sidewalks in the southwestern city area with Beth Eden street completed and Wall street in progress. About 600 feet of sidewalk laid daily by 40 to 50 workers with plans to move to Golden West avenue after Wall street. curbs and gutters may follow later on Shafter highway and Santa Fe way. Power company crews reset poles to align with upcoming sidewalks.
About 20 Shafter Kiwanis members and guests attended a joint meeting at the El Tejon hotel in Bakersfield hosted by the local club with Shafter and Taft clubs as guests. The event drew over 200 attendees.
Rudy Meeks aged 19 was fined 10 dollars and given a 60 day jail sentence suspended for a year. BerNice Lee Kelly aged 23 was fined 25 dollars for disturbing the peace after a quarrel at the White Spot.

Kerneth Anderson 16 remained in serious condition at Bakersfield Hospital after a Thursday accident near Lerdo road two miles west of Shafter. The tractor toppled backward trapping him against a harrow, the gear shift piercing his left leg, requiring an acetylene torch to free him. He was rescuing a bank and slope at the irrigation reservoir when the mishap occurred.
Apricot picking began Sunday at the Sill ranch on Lerdo road east of Shafter. The 80 acre orchard is under cultivation with good yield and quality. cot fruit is sold at the fresh fruit market, and later in will be called for canning.
