A garbled notice invites readers to critique and engage with chamber work. It encourages familiarization with chamber efforts and invites participation in early morning breakfasts to share suggestions and discuss topics.
At the Bakersfield Memorial Hall the flag burning ceremony organized by American Legion Post 26 drew an attentive crowd of Shefter residents. Guest speaker Jim Hayden criticized global governance and warned against a one world government and armed force, while Boy Scouts opened the program and colors were presented.
New officers are installed as John Er and A J Smith assume leadership. The ceremony marks a transition of duties and the start of a new administration.
The third Sabin oral polio clinic will distribute Type II vaccine to about 200000 residents of Kern County. The event runs 1 to 9 PM at Veterans Memorial Hall with sugar cube doses priced at 25 cents. Last month 7344 Shafter residents attended.
The Shafter summer recreation program offers swimming softball baseball golf and a reading club as part of its itinerary. About 255 participants signed up for tutoring classes for beginners through adults, with sessions daily in the park near Memorial Hall and at Rio Bravo Dome during evenings and afternoons.
The thrift store at 200 Central Ave in Shafter opens this week, offering hundreds of used items at low prices. Part of a nationwide Salvation Army chain, the self supporting shop sells cast-off clothing and re-made articles.
The Board passed a resolution praising local firemen for faithfully performing their duties. The commendation notes their dedication and service to the community and recognizes their actions during emergencies.
A special program titled Music Magic and a Message will be held at First Baptist Church 350 Pine Street this evening at 7 30. Biola College students perform with soprano Marilyn Visser from Los Angeles and stage acts including Wilburn’s Trunk Escape and a drama Roger Williams and Mary detailing religious freedom.
A California department report shows Kern potato carload shipments from the Shafter area down from 3292 last year to 1689 to date, a roughly 50 percent drop, while Wasco shipments fall from 2276 in 1961 to 775 by last Sunday. Weather and rainfall factors cited as causing reduced output across regions.
Airman Second Class Charles J. Peak, son of Mr. and Mrs. Viv Peak, is being reassigned to a California base. He trained as an aircraft radio repairman at Keesler Field Mississippi after graduating from Shafter High School and attending Bakersfield Junior College.
