Funeral service for former Shafter resident Luther Sowder
Funeral services were held June 3 at Pierce Brothers San Monica Chapel for Luther E. Sowder 55. Burial followed at Shafter Memorial Park. Rev. Gwin Turner officiated, with Rev. H. D. Rutledge of Shafter First Southern Baptist Church at the graveside. Farm price rise triggered outside U S says Yeutter
Clayton K Yeutter Assistant Secretary of Agriculture for International Affairs and Commodity Programs told the Kern County Farm Bureau meeting in Bakersfield that recent high farm prices were caused largely by events outside the United States. He cited weather in Russia India Southeast Asia Africa and Australia and a dollar devaluation as major factors. He urged expanded farm exports and liberalized world trade with a focus on regional food security and multilateral action via the United Nations World Food Program.

Armed robbery suspects sought in Bakersfield case
Warrants issued for a 22 year old Bakersfield man and a 24 year old Shafter man in connection with an armed robbery of a Bakersfield man last week. The victims were approached by two men who offered marijuana then fled after robbery. No arrests reported by Monday morning.
