Gunnarson's Out Fumble Neuman's For Peewee Win ends 18 to 13 after a miscued, high scoring game on the high school field. Gunnarson's players Broom Goody Bonham Ellis Kelly West lead multiple innings with walks hits and runs amid numerous errors while Neuman Peewees Ayers Harris Powell McCright Granger Garriet and Seibel push back with homers and scattered hits.
Mr Anthony Ponikvar of Bradford Pennsylvania visits Mr and Mrs Odell Dunkin and recalls serving in the U S Navy in 1946 as a Motor Machinist 3/C. He rode his motorcycle from Pennsylvania to stay with the Dunkins for some time.
Shafter potato shipments surged to a record 306 carloads in one day after a low of 88 the prior Saturday. Through early June the season totals show 3590 carloads shipped, with recent days ranging 270 to 306 loads, and government purchases reaching 344 truck equivalents.
Ardis Walker First District supervisor was slated to address a Friday evening Shafter Chamber of Commerce meeting on planned government consolidation. The event at Canelo Motel would start at 7 30 p m with arrangements in place for Bill Stoller Chamber president to speak.
Over three days in Shafter the gendarmerie detained four drunks and one AWOL, including Sailor Charles J. Lewis from a ship. Elza Byrd, 36, paid 150 dollars and faced 150 days. Roberts, 31, and Barnum, 41, fined 25 dollars with 30 days suspended. Thomas, 45, and Stuart, 55, jailed on drunk charges with 60 days for Thomas and pending for Stuart.
The Central Hardware Juniors overwhelmed the Shafter Rotary nine on the Shafter High diamond by 13 to 2. After a tight first half, Central Hardware pulled away in the third frame as their offense surged. The lineup featured Merton Brown, Kirkham, Max Tudor, Gaede, Bartel, Handel, Wey, Allen, and Nixon on the mound.
The Brown and Bryant Peewee softball nine overwhelmed the Dalke brothers 16 to 4 on Wednesday. Jack Brown and Glen Handel sparked a second inning explosion as B and B scored twelve more runs later, while Dalke managed only four runs in the first inning and were shut down thereafter. The Brown and Bryant lineup included Harry Leach Bruce Muir Jack Brown Glen Handel Roy Brewer Bill Nixon Dave Muir Walt Simonson Rex Tudor Harry Vannatta and Cummings.
R F Altrock formerly assistant cashier at Dunsmuir Bank of America since 1947 is reassigned to the Shafter branch as assistant to the manager. L M Giannini confirms the move and notes Altrock’s California banking career since 1941. H H Miller Jr will replace Altrock at Dunsmuir, moving from the Stockton main office.

The city summer league opens Monday at Richland Primary with Shafter Mayor McClure tossing the first pitch to Joe Frizzell. Frank Russell's horsehiders duel L. A. Camp's nine, while Post Office Market meets Hitchcock on the Rio Bravo field. Games start at 8 p.m. with a 15 minute grace period and festivities planned.
Louis Schuyler announces two Peewee games and one Junior game at Shafter High. The Peewee Ruhlmans face the Neumans at 7 p.m on the west field as Dalke Brothers meet Shafter Rotary on the east. The Junior Kiwanis nine play Rotary at 8 30 p.m with all invited.
The Shafter 20-30 club awarded a scholarship to James Crabb, Shafter High student proxy. Crabb plans two years at Bakersfield Junior College to study engineering. Club events include new officer installation at the June 26 Kimberlina Grounds barbecue with many state officials expected.
State wide recognition goes to the new Shafter Pump & Machine Shop on Central Valley Highway north of town. Opened in January after seven years at Five Points, it is owned by Mr. and Mrs. G. D. Prather and serves farms with irrigation pumps. The shop sells Layne & Bowler deep well pumps and Jacuzzi systems, featuring a full machine shop and rapid emergency service.
Assemblyman Joe C. Lewis introduced a bill in Sacramento to form special soil conservation districts in California. The aim is to control dust storms in the San Joaquin Valley by enabling districts to elect a board and authorize improvements on lands with owner consent.
Evangeline Steel a Kern County beauty queen departs for the Miss California pageant in Santa Cruz to vie for the chance to represent California in Atlantic City. Velma R. Martin accompanies Steel to Santa Cruz as the Santa Cruz Chamber of Commerce sponsors the event.
Oman Swan Bennett, 27, of Shafter, faces attempted murder and criminal assault charges. He was arrested after allegedly knifing George Grotz, 42, Buttonwillow, and attacking his wife, Lillian, 26, southwest of Shafter. Grotz was treated and released. both victims identified Bennett as their attacker.
Lewis Warneke of Shafter aged 43 died quietly in a Bakersfield hospital last Wednesday morning. He left his widow Ona Marie and three children, sons J. C. Warneke 16 and Richard Lewis 9, and daughter Gladys Marie 15. The family had lived at the corner of Shafter Avenue and Jackson for eight years.
Adolf Kirschenmann announces a Sunday open house from 2 to 5 at his new 289 Cross, Shafter. The 2700 square foot home, built by George Van Natta, showcases oak interiors, indirect lighting, automatic cedar closets, and a chef level kitchen reminiscent of the Waldorf Astoria. Glen Thomas of Bakersfield did the blueprints. Kirschenmann oversaw the plans.
Local grower states that Shafter cotton planting is underway and fertilizer plans are under way. He recommends applying 300 to 500 pounds per acre of ammonium sulfate or equivalent either as side dressing or mixed with irrigation water. If dry fertilizer is used, irrigation should follow promptly. Watering is essential throughout the season for best growth.
