Potatoes from the Shafter shipping and packing center show more than 4333 carloads for the season with daily shipments above 250 carloads. Wednesday saw 288 and Tuesday 286, prices around the dollar mark after a dip to 75 cents last week. Digging washing and packing proceed rapidly and harvest is expected to run past mid July. Onion shipments for the season.
Deputies Roy Dodenhoff and John Reily arrested Ben Dickerson in Shafter on a Ringgold warrant for violating the internal revenue act. Dickerson allegedly left Oklahoma after a gun battle with federal agents and is to be returned. Velma King was arrested on a Seminole telegraphic warrant. she cites marital difficulties over child custody and is held on the county charge.
Motion pictures of Shafter will be shown Sunday and Monday on the Shafter Theatre screen. Scenes filmed on the streets depict everyday life of the growing community, including the fire department police schools and local clubs. Citizens may see how they look in the movies.
The program for Shafter high school graduation at Richland Grammar School on Friday June 11 at 8 p.m. includes processional War March of the Priests, invocation by Rev. Alfred T. Chandler, songs and selections by Rosie Unruh Venona Bergen and Don Suydam, academic awards led by Paul Van derbike, a commencement address by Dr. Fredrick P. Woellner, presentation of class by E. P. Jones, diplomas by H. D. West, and recessional by the Shafter high school band with audience asked to remain seated.
Wilma Jean Henderson of Richland Grammar School received a certificate of merit from the Lantham Foundation of Oakland for an art poster in the first annual state wide contest promoting Humane Education. Glenn O Nay presented the award at graduation exercises. Wilma, daughter of Mr and Mrs Joe Henderson, also earned a gold seal on her diploma as an honor student.
State ranger H. P. Bowhay arrived with gas masks after 4 pm on Tuesday to locate the origin of fumes escaping from beneath the shed of Lachenmaier Brothers & Neumann. The odor was traced to a special type septic system leak, prompting the emergency response.
A fire at the Eckmann brothers ranch on Fresno avenue near Shafter destroyed a bunkhouse and two cars. The blaze started from a overheated wood stove flue at 8 am, trapping three families who escaped with few belongings. Firefighters faced low water pressure. ranch pump aid helped control the 45 minute blaze. Loss estimated at 1200 with 550 on the dwelling, 100 insured. occupants included Mr. and Mrs. Allen and three sons, a widow and daughter, plus several other families.
Shafter's postoffice opened in its new James street building this morning after moving last night. Residents with boxes at the old site are urged to clear them promptly. General delivery mail is now at the new building with three windows for stamps, registered mail, and miscellaneous business. Expect a short transition as new boxes and keys are assigned. Over 500 boxes are now available to residents.
The first graduates from Shafter High School were twins Arrio and Arrvo Green who earned diplomas in 1980. They were among the earliest seniors at the school, which began in 1928 with initial classes.

Schierlmann to Rubydell Phillips Lena Farmer Trulah Loring Laverne Morehead Loretta Lowrie Nita Philly Ray McClure Robert Curtis Johnny Mayer Phillip Haag and Truman Higgins.

Voters in Richland school district face a special election Friday to approve a $50 000 bond issue to fund an additional school building. District officials cite overcrowding and growth with 128 graduates noted at the Thursday ceremony and anticipate continued rising enrollments.
Emil Bender was unanimously elected to the board of trustees of Richland grammar school district for a three year term. Fifty one ballots were cast at the school election. He will succeed Adolf Kirschenmann whose term expires July 1. Ohanneson is current clerk. The electors named Ohanneson and Neufeld as not serving with Bender. The board plans to meet before July 1 to select a chairman and a clerk.
The local Auxiliary awarded pen sets to the top two eighth grade writers for essays on What the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag Means to Me. Hilda Wesner captured first place with her emay on Americanism.
One hundred and twenty eight elementary students graduated from Richland grammar school in a Thursday night commencement at the auditorium. YMC A secretary R M Ford delivered the address with theme Courage. Students displayed musical numbers and a school orchestra provided selections as diplomas were awarded.
A blaze consumed the three top tents of the Harry Jennings Porter traveling show on a vacant lot beside the Shafter city firehouse in Fort Bragg on Monday. The act is well known to Shafter residents with ties to the troupe noted in the last section.
